Our agricultural courses are practically based with the student learning skills while working on our own special training farms.

NEXT GENERATION: Farming Skills Level 2 –  NO FEES!

Qualification: New Zealand Certificate in Primary Industry Skills (Level 2) – NZ2218

Programme Aims and Outcomes

This 15 week fulltime, practically delivered unit standard based programme, is designed to appeal to students with no experience in Agriculture who wish to gain entry level employment in the farming or animal care primary industry. Students may also go on to continue study in one of our higher level qualifications.

Depending on the strand, the unit standard based content is selected from Stock Handling Skills, Agricultural Vehicles, Farm Fencing, Feeding and Grazing, Assist with Milking and Sheep Husbandry (Dag/Crutch). All strands have Rural Health and Safety skills and knowledge units embedded.

On completion of this programme, students will be able to carry out practical production tasks under supervision.

Where this programme is offered by schools through Ag Challenge Ltd, secondary school students can gain credits towards NCEA.

There are no mandatory pre-requisites for this qualification and it is Open Entry; however all students will be interviewed to ensure suitability to the programme and career path.

Programmes and options offered are run subject to numbers and a school based delivery is available. The programme is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under section 249 of the Education Act 1989, and Ag Challenge Limited is accredited to provide it under section 250 of the Act.

 

NEXT GENERATION: Farming Systems Technology Level 3 – Dairy Strand

Qualification: New Zealand Certificate in Agriculture (Farming Systems) (Level 3) – NZ2220

Programme Aims and Outcomes

This 24 week fulltime 50/50 Practical/Theory unit standard based programme is designed to appeal to students who wish to transition into agricultural employment or into higher professional level agricultural tertiary education especially secondary school students or those serious about pastoral farming.

The content of the programme covers:

  • Rural Health and Safety including personal well being
  • Livestock Health
  • Water Quality and Supply
  • GPS Use
  • Herd Testing
  • Soils and Fertilisers
  • Pasture and Grazing Management
  • Sustainable Land Management
  • Milking
  • Dairy Shed Hygiene
  • Cattle Handling and Treatments

This unique programme of study provides the practical skills and broad theoretical knowledge to support pastoral farming in the Manawatu/Rangitikei/Taranaki region in Dairy farming.

Where this programme is offered by schools through Ag Challenge Ltd, secondary school students can gain credits towards NCEA.

NEXT GENERATION: Livestock Husbandry Technology (Dairy) Level 3

Qualification: New Zealand Certificate in Agriculture (Livestock Husbandry) (Level 3) – NZ2214

Programme Aims and Outcomes

This fulltime, 22 week, unit standard practically based programme is aimed for people with some pastoral farming experience to help develop their skills and knowledge to safely carry out core livestock husbandry tasks in a dairy context with minimal supervision.

The content of the programme covers:

  • Calving
  • Genetics
  • Animal Welfare and Behaviour
  • Handling and Moving Livestock
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Animal Health Disorders, Diseases and Treatment
  • Bio-security
  • Rearing of stock from Birth, First Mating, Sale or Slaughter

Delivery is made up of 40% classroom and 60% practical’s and included in the programme is the equivalent of 120 hours of work experience.

Graduates from this programme will be able to apply for farming positions as dairy farm assistants responsible for calving and livestock health.

NEXT GENERATION: Pastoral Livestock Production Technology Level 3

Qualification: New Zealand Certificate in Agriculture (Pastoral Livestock Production) (Level 3) – NZ2217

Programme Aims and Outcomes

This 19 week, fulltime 50/50 Practical/Theory unit standard based programme is designed for people who have gained foundation agricultural knowledge who wish to find employment in a pastoral production system with minimal supervision.

The content of this programme covers:

  • Plant species identification, selection, establishment and renovation
  • Soil properties and fertility
  • Weather and impact on Pasture Growth
  • Feed Budgeting
  • Pasture Pests and Diseases
  • Maintaining a Reliable Farm Water Supply
  • Feeding Livestock to Meet Production Targets

This unique programme of study provides the knowledge and practical skills to pathway into employment roles to manage pastoral farming systems in the Manawatu/Rangitikei/Taranaki region.

NEXT GENERATION: Livestock Production Management Level 5 – part-time (2days/week)

Qualification: New Zealand Certificate in Primary Industry Production Management (Level 5) with strands in Livestock Production and Crop Production MOE Code NZ2211  **Pending NZQA Approval.

Programme Aims and Outcomes

Graduates of the qualification will be able to:

  • Identify high performance in a primary industry production system, analyse and benchmark against a specific production system, and recommend strategies for improvement.
  • Develop, implement and monitor cohesive feeding, breeding, and animal health plans to achieve production goals.

Graduates of this qualification would be appropriately employed in production management positions in primary industry businesses and may be supervising others.
