The quality of trained milk harvesters graduating in June after five months of intensive instruction on the AgEXCEL approved Level 3 milking course at Ag Challenge are all looking forward to starting in the industry with calving starting this month.
The current focus is on interviewing prospective students for the next intake starting in mid-July, “the dairy industry is still in demand for motivated and keen individuals wanting to start on a career in dairy farming” says Tim Evans tutor in charge of the programme.
“With the last intake of students who have just graduated 2 weeks ago we had 95% complete the qualification and two weeks later 12 out of 17 or 71% have employment in the dairy industry” said Tim. This is a testament to the effort put in by the individuals themselves and the staff and tutors involved.
Ag Challenge’s focus over the last two years has been mapping out a credible pathway for students and the students are supported by industry-focused tutors. This is being reflected in the standard of milker’s Ag Challenge is able to offer dairy farmers. It’s also one of the reasons Ag Challenge have worked hard over the last two years to gain AgEXCEL accreditation for the Level 2 schools programme and the Level 3 Milking course.

With calving starting in a couple of weeks students will have an abundance of opportunity throughout the course to be involved in on-farm work experience on the Ag Challenge training farm. Work experience and farm visits as part of the course give the farmer a golden opportunity to view these students, thereby making a more balanced decision when selecting their next milker. These placements can save a lot of stress and anxiety further down the track for both the employer and employee.
Training is not about racing through the levels and pinning a certificate on the wall, it is about ensuring every student has the opportunity to cover every base competently at each level before progressing. This starts with our schools programme in Year 11 or 12 and flows into our 5 month full time level 3 milking course. Gaining qualifications is a journey, not a race.
